Covid-19 infections, deaths drop in Bangladesh

83 deaths and 2,697 new infections reported

Bangladesh has logged 83 fatalities from the Covid-19 in the 24 hours to Saturday morning from 88 deaths the previous day.

With the latest figures, the total coronavirus death toll in the country stands at 10,952.

A total of 2,697 new infections have been reported across the country during the same time, down from 3,629 cases the previous day. 

The infection rate further dropped to 13.11%. However, the overall infection rate stands at 13.95% and the total caseload reached 742,400 to date.

The daily test positivity rate was reported at 14% on Friday, a drop from Thursday’s 14.63%.

The seven-day moving average of daily deaths in the country stood at 95.57 on Saturday.

Of the 83 deceased – 58 men and 25 women – 52 were from Dhaka division; 13 from Chittagong; five from Khulna; four from Barisal; and three each from, Rajshahi, Sylhet, and Rangpur divisions.

Of them, 53 patients died in government hospitals, 34 in private hospitals, and one at home. 

Fifty-six of the deceased patients were aged above 60, 17 between 51 and 60, five between 41 and 50, and five between 31 and 40.

So far, 8,068 men (73.67%) and 2,884 women (26.33%) have died from Covid-19 across the country.

Since the beginning, 6,397 people have died in Dhaka division, 1,977 in Chittagong, 577 in Rajshahi, 668 in Khulna, 321 in Barisal, 365 in Sylhet, 413 in Rangpur, and 234 in Mymensingh.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.48%.

The health authorities said 5,477 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.

So far, 653,151 patients – 87.98% – have made full recovery across the country.

As many as 20,571 samples, including the pending ones, were tested in the 350 authorized labs – government and private – across the country.

Currently, 19,452 people are in isolation and 53,860 are quarantined.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China’s Wuhan city in late December, 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast-spreading coronavirus has claimed more than 3,102,000 lives and infected as many as 146,342,000 people across the world till Saturday afternoon, according to worldometer.

As many as 124,166,000 people have recovered from Covid-19, which has affected 219 countries and territories across the planet.
